Three Hills Gallery, named for the three members of the Hill family, is located in the former Fields Art Gallery at 332 Kit Carson Road across from El Monte Sagrado Resort. Three Hills Gallery features sculpture, painting and furniture from local artists as well as high-end vacuum tube audio equipment from Cary Audio Design and speakers from Totem Acoustic.

Three Hills Gallery showcases the two loves of Allison and Simon Hill, who met in Taos in 1988. They’ve returned after 13 years in Austin. “This place always had a strong heart connection for us,” says Allison. “We always wanted our daughter, Sita, to feel at home here, and this is a way she can be part of the family’s entrepreneurial enterprise in this community where we’re putting down roots.”

Allison grew up surrounded by inspiring art, later worked in galleries, and framed artworks under Taoseña Carmen Woodall during the 1980s. Simon, a former IBM engineer and audiophile, spends his free time restoring vintage tube audio equipment. His love of the dynamic, warm sound of tube amplifiers and speakers, and their artistic qualities, seemed a natural fit with the traditional artworks the gallery would feature.

“It’s a specialized market, but a growing one,” says Simon of the tube audio industry. “Audiophiles really appreciate the clean, warm, truer sound that tubes give to any music. They had their heyday in the 1950s and 60s, so there’s a whole generation with no clue that this technology even existed before our transistor and digital age. Those that do remember, and those introduced to it now, fall in love with the more faithful, life-like sound.”

Three Hills Gallery displays the audio equipment on the handmade, hand-dyed furniture of Mike Trujillo of Rio Grande Furniture. Currently, the gallery displays the sculptured metal and colored wood works of Yoshi Aoki, the paintings and masks of SD Youngwolf, and oils and prints by James Fields. Allison says that she and Simon chose artists that speak to them for their debut in the Taos gallery scene. “Yoshi’s work is organic, fresh and calm and fun at same time, and shows really well with Mike’s furniture, which is also dyed wood, colorful, inviting and warm,” she says.
